THOUGHTS ON CONDUCTING

It is an honor and privilege to conduct a musical ensemble. My goal is to help each singer reach their full potential in contributing to the eventual performance. Choral music is the only form of communal music-making where the instrument is inside the singer. As a conductor, I must develop trust, compatibility, and motivation within each musician and engage their imagination and desire to achieve their potential.

As a choral conductor, I believe in the overwhelming power of a great text to speak directly to the souls of the singers and the audience. It is my task to respect the text and unlock its inspiration for each singer. The music then enhances the text and becomes a vehicle for deeper communication, understanding, and expression.

It is a distinct joy to help an ensemble accomplish a musical result more profound and powerful than most of the participants could achieve by themselves. As conductor, I take the role of inspiring and motivating each singer to give themselves to a whole that is fulfilling and inspiring. This process is about what we can accomplish together to discover profound and unexpected musical insights and experiences.

As a result, we all learn more about ourselves and others and the world in which we live.
