Chair Caning Instructions; Spider Web A Pattern
Steps 3 & 4. The First Diagonals

The first diagonals are run with Medium cane. It is run at about 60 degrees, starting at front left & moving towards the upper right. It may be easier NOT to start in the front left corner hole, so the short runs do not add confusion.  Also, you will probably NOT end the first run in the upper right corner. I would suggest starting from the hole with the first full horizontal cane. This might help avoid the confusion that I had at the start of this step. (I had to shut off the TV & ask the wife to take the dog to another part of the house, because I needed total quiet to figure this out. Of course I made points with doing that. <grin>)

The first diagonals run UNDER the first horizontal & OVER TWO verticals.

The vertical canes will tend to move together. It is important to force these to stay straight. Steps 6 & 7 will be more difficult if the vertical canes are allowed to move close to each other.  I had difficulty with keeping the verticals straight.

Hurrah, Step 3 completed. Notice how the short rows on the side rails had a tendency to squeeze together. I paid for this later.

Step 4. The Second Diagonal. 60 degree. In this picture I used colored ties to illustrate the diagonals in steps 3 (yellow) & step 4 (red).  Using Medium cane, this step works from lower front right, and works towards the upper back left. The cane runs UNDER the Horizontals in step 1 & OVER TWO Verticals in step 2.  Again, take care to keep the verticals from moving together, keep them spread as best you can.
