Welcome! This website is currently in transition. I will be leaving MSU in May to focus on my work in management consulting.
I am an expert in leadership and communication. My research and professional activities have focused on how people respond to feedback from others and how best to provide feedback so that others will best hear the message. I have worked in consulting for 6 years, working with clients in government, legal, and entertainment industries, and partnering with some of the major consulting firms in the world.
Currently, I am affiliated with MSU's I/O Psychology Graduate Program, which was rated the #1 U.S. Master’s program in I/O psychology. I will be moving to Los Angeles, CA in May.
For an overview of my primary activities, use these links to the brief topics on this page:
Research: An expert on communication and leadership, I have studied the effects of feedback on individuals for 12 years. My Relational Devaluation Model demonstrates that although negative feedback in personal and professional relationships makes people feel worse and question their own capabilities; the specific effect differs depending on the type of relationship involved (professional or personal). Thus, how people react and cope with feedback differs according to the interpersonal context. See my research page for more information on my Relational Devaluation Model - and other research from my lab.
Teaching: I primarily teach courses at MSU on research methods and statistics, as well as topics in social psychology, such as close relationships, attitudes, and personality (see my course index page for individuals pages related to my MSU courses). Additionally, I offer specific training sessions on SPSS, approaches to performance review, and leadership as a consultant.
Professional Activities: Consulting, lecturing, and media appearances comprise my regular professional activities outside the academe.

I am a regular panelist on the PBS program Mental Engineering. On the show, comedians, academics, and professionals in fields relevant to advertising and business discuss their opinions of television ads and marketing.
